We Dream In Black

Black Domestic Workers call to improve standards in the Care Industry through a collaboration between the National Domestic Workers Alliance and The Institute for Policy Studies. We have been honored to collaborate on two major storytelling initiatives with the bold, brave, and committed Black Domestic Workers at We Dream in Black.

The most recent was our video work on Notes from the Storm. In mid-2020, we helped tell the story of the disproportionate negative effects that COVID-19 on Black Domestic Workers during the pandemic. They are going into people’s homes to do the work that must be done, and often without basic protections. NDWA and IPS commissioned a study, and asked us to produce this video for the campaign.

Our first collaboration with these remarkable women, took us directly into their homes and workplaces, where we were privileged to hear their stories. We learned why they want to care for our vulnerable elders and our littlest treasures, what they are fighting for, and how they are reaching out to the most invisible among them. Following our collaboration, they published Pay, Professionalism & Respect, a two-volume report detailing the history and current challenges facing black nannies, home care workers, and house cleaners in Atlanta, GA, and Durham, NC. Challenges include systemically low wages, rampant sexual harassment, and a lack of benefits. The report also details policy recommendations and reforms that are needed to transform the entire care industry, which is one of the fastest growing in the country.
